Day 5, July 31, Wrap Up

My greatest take aways:

We are not alone in the system and should ask for help when needed.

I learned that I am a people person, to people who know me that came as no surprise, but it was a huge one to me.  I always thought I was a logical person, who was introverted, but apparently I can talk to just about anyone about anything.

Heather pushed me to do more public speaking and it has helped me tremendously.  I now know that I can speak to groups, so long as I understand my subject.

I am very good at communicating with my staff and board, I am working on being able to communicate better with County and City Boards to get more money for the library.

Moving forward:

One way is that I am going to be setting up an e-portfolio, I think the public and the city and county boards may find that interesting.  The e-folio will show our budget and how little the city and county actually give to us.

Thank you:

Heather, I said that I think you are an extremely intelligent person and that I don't always agree with you, but the disagreements are slight and far between.  I understand that you have been trying to give us a better understanding of what we could and should be moving towards and I think you have succeed beyond what you actually thought possible.  You graduated 23 wonderful people into the library system and introduced me personally to many amazing and very different people.  For that, I can only say THANK YOU.

Day 4, Thursday, July30

The challenges have proven to be more interesting than usual.  I find them to be fun most of the time, but they do show that not everyone is a team player.  Luckily, I was on a team that we could work through our few problems, others I saw fall apart or implode to unfathomable degree to me.  I firmly believe it takes everyone and that we all have something to share.

Wonderful, great team effort. Almost finished.  We have a great relationship, each of us complimenting the other.

I use part of the principles discussed, but I think there are great lessons to be learned from the principles in the book.  Trying to lead by example is not the easiest lesson to learn, we often forget that others have feelings and need to have positive reinforcement to work efficiently and happily.  We need to give them reasons and when something is wrong, give examples of other ways that it could be done,  and that we all make mistakes.  Personally, the phrase "Do unto others"  has been my philosophy for the last 10 or so years, but putting yourself in others shoes can be harder than most of us realize.  It is easy to forget that we haven't always had the knowledge we now carry and that others just don't always know the ways it could be done.  It becomes a teaching moment that can benefit us as much as the person we are trying to help.

PLMI Year 3, Monday, Day One

We were given team assignments today, I was placed on a team with Gail Spragins, Pamela Rudnitzki.  TEAM BAM is the name of the group, B for Brad, A for GAil, and M for PaM.  I think we will do a great job working on the group assignments.  The assignments look to be interesting and I think can be finished on time.
